WEIGHT-INCLUSIVE CARE

WHAT IS WEIGHT-INCLUSIVE CARE

Weight-inclusive care is an approach to health that recognizes wellbeing cannot be reduced to a number on a scale. Rather than centering weight loss as the primary goal, it focuses on sustainable health behaviors, quality of life, and the many factors that shape health over time.

At its core, weight-inclusive care recognizes that health is influenced by more than individual choices. Biology, genetics, life experiences, access to resources, and socioeconomic conditions all play a role.

This approach does not ignore health. It simply asks us to look beyond weight and consider the whole person.

WHY IT MATTERS

For a long time, we've been taught to view weight as a reflection of health, responsibility, and even personal success. It's a message that shows up everywhere, from healthcare settings and public health campaigns to social media and everyday conversations.

Weight-inclusive care invites us to consider a broader picture.

While individual choices matter, they are only one part of the story. Genetics, biology, chronic stress, medications, life experiences, access to resources, and socioeconomic conditions all influence health. When we focus primarily on weight, we risk overlooking many of the factors that shape a person's wellbeing.

This approach isn't about ignoring health or pretending weight doesn't matter. It's about recognizing that weight is only one piece of a much larger story.

When people don't feel judged because of their body size, conversations often become more honest and productive. The focus shifts from changing a number on the scale to understanding what matters most to the person and exploring what health might look like in the context of their own life.

By looking beyond weight alone, helping professionals and organizations can create environments that support health while reducing shame, judgment, and stigma.

WHERE IS IT USED?

Weight-inclusive principles can be applied anywhere conversations about health, behavior change, and wellbeing take place.

Dietitians, mental health providers, eating disorder treatment teams, healthcare leaders, educators, workplace wellness professionals, and other helping professionals use weight-inclusive approaches to support health while reducing the unintended harms that can come from weight-focused care.

Although applications vary across settings, the goal remains the same: creating environments where people can pursue health without shame, judgment, or stigma.

BRINGING WEIGHT-INCLUSIVE CARE INTO YOUR WORK

Weight-inclusive care isn't just beneficial for the people you serve. It can change the experience of providing care.

For Helping Professionals : Weight-inclusive care offers a different way to approach conversations about health, eating, movement, and behavior change. Rather than returning to weight as the primary measure of success, the focus shifts to what matters most to the person in front of you.

When people feel respected rather than assessed, conversations become more honest, relationships deepen, and engagement improves. Many helping professionals find that this approach aligns more closely with their values while offering care that is both compassionate and evidence-informed. For some, that shift also brings relief: less pressure to fix a number and more room for the kind of connection that makes the work meaningful.

For Organizations : When weight-inclusive principles are integrated across a team or organization, they create a shared foundation for how people are treated and how care is delivered.

Including leadership in this work matters. When weight-inclusive values show up at every level, not just in individual appointments, they become part of the culture rather than simply a communication skill. Over time, that commitment can strengthen trust, reduce the harm associated with weight stigma, and support more consistent, equitable care.
